PAC Meeting, Tues June 5th

Hi everyone, Our last PAC meeting of the school year is scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday) at 6:30pm in the library.  We will be having a brief reveiw of the year from a PAC perspective, a look ahead to next year and we will be joined by a special guest, Iraj Khabazian, PAC Chair of Thunderbird Elementary and our DPAC (DistricPAC) Representative.  Free child care will be available in the gym. Reminder: The Lorax Opera today! 2 pm

This is just a simple reminder that Garibaldi students will be performing the Lorax at 2 pm in the gymnasium.  Admission is by donation and will support the Garibaldi Annex Music Program.  See you there.

Rick Hansen Relay

Wanted to pass on some details of the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay finishing here in Hastings Park. On May 21st @ 5:00 pm, Rick will enter the PNE Amphitheatre to finish off the relay. Following this there will be a few performances (see attached).

Popcorn for the Lorax!

Today's fundraiser for the Lorax production was a huge success.  Thanks to everyone for coming out to support us today.  We have raised $153 dollars that will be used toward costumes and sets!

The next Hot Lunch event will be Pizza day on May 17th.  If you have not gotten your orders in, please do so soon.  You can drop your forms and payment off to the PAC box in the office.

Dear PAC and DPAC chairs and parents,

 

As we enter the final chapter of this school year, it is a time when the excitement of students and families grows, as preparation for celebrations of student accomplishments take shape and provide opportunity to reflect and share achievements and successes for the school year.

 

While plans for most of these celebrations and events have been made long ago, I am sad to share that recent discussions in an alarming number of our schools in this province are not positive ones. Members are reporting that the response to parent offers to volunteer to support their students and school community have been very discouraging, negative and multifaceted. Many events are being cancelled even when parents are stepping forward with time, skills and resources to successfully host the activity. Events (many deep in tradition) planned months in advance are being cancelled and deposits paid being lost due to these cancellations - citing policies, liability, special certifications etc.  as reasons why parents cannot volunteer in the absence of teachers.

 

As parents, the safety of our child is paramount, and we can all agree that activities must ensure the safety of our students.  BCCPAC has and continues to receive input from parents that indicates many barriers to parent engagement continue to exist in our schools both culturally and through restrictive policies and practises which are not guided by concern for student safety or a children first approach.

 

While the education system has the time and opportunity to recover from failure, individual students and parents do not have this opportunity. Parents have but one opportunity to raise their child and have an expectation that our school system will support each student fully by providing and allowing  access to all resources available to ensure the best possible opportunities for every student during their educational experience.

 

The failure to embrace and welcome parent volunteers in our school communities during the ongoing dispute between the BCTF and BCPSEA highlights the lack of progress our system has made in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment and culture where parents feel valued for their ability to contribute to our school communities to support student success and healthy communities.

 

BCCPAC encourages parent leaders to engage their school communities and create opportunities to participate in informed dialogue on parent volunteerism in your school and district. By asking genuine questions on the issues that matter to your community, by identifying barriers which impede parent involvement while also identifying opportunities for increased parent and community engagement, together, we will create the conditions and learning environment that we desire for our children, for our employees, for our families and for our future society.

 

We encourage you to keep BCCPAC informed of your discussions as we continue our commitment to advocating for parent involvement in our BC education system.

Sushi Day today

Hi everyone,
I would have to say that being on the Hot lunch committee has been a very rewarding experience so far this year.  When we scheduled a sushi day, I'd have to admit that I was unsure of how well it would be received by the students.  My reservations were quickly set aside as I tallied the numbers of kids that were signing up for this lunch day.  With 41 orders and very little time to get the orders in, I would say that this was quite a showing.

Today's lunch was a lot of fun, and I left with a smile on my face.  I think I'll have to bring my camera next time to make record of how much the kids enjoyed themselves.

Some of today's highlights would have to be Kirin who I am pretty sure must have a hollow leg.  He kept begging for more and anything that I set before him was gobbled up in no time flat.  At one point I had to 'test his leg' to see if it was getting full! LOL.

Jordan, who I understand is a pro when it comes to sushi and prefers the nigiri style, very quietly came to me and told me that she didn't like the seaweed.  So we explored whether there was another type that she would prefer from the few pieces that we had in excess, with no luck.  Then a second time she came to me and asked if she could just pull the fish part out and eat that.

The Division 1 boys, and in particular Justin were quite funny today.  They all decided that Pickled ginger was an integral part of today's meal.  Egging each other on to eat more and more.  Justin was my only taker on the wasabi, and when he saw the 1/2 teaspoon that I brought to his plate told me that it wasn't enough, so I filled the spoon and set it at his plate.  It was a few minutes after as I did another round of the lunch room that all the boys were giggling and he had tears running down his cheeks.... no he didn't eat the whole spoonful, the little that he did have though was a little too much I think!

So... We've still got some time to go before Pizza day in May.  If you haven't gotten your children's forms in yet, please do.  We are hoping to be ahead of the game from here on in.

Also, I had a note from one of the parents about there not being a veg option for the Burger day.  If your child is Vegetarian, please just note it on the form and we will ensure there is a garden burger available for them.
